MOST COMMON AILMENT IN RAINY SEASON : leptospirosis , water borne diarrhoea , fungal skin infections leptospirosis can happen in pets like humans through water lodged areas exposure to poor health skin / skin with wounds or even through food or water contaminated by rats urine / feces PREVENTION : ANNUAL VACCINATIONS FOR YOUR PET AND STRICT HYGIENE MEASURES water borne diaseases avoid water lodging areas for walk to your pets , strict hygienic measures as sponge cleansing feet with antispetic wash and pet shampoos after every walk and through drying of feet and underbelly ! fungal infections contrary to belief , a dog requires bath more often than once a week , as climatic conditions in mumbai demand it . equally important is drying , preferrably blow drying of hair with a low intensity sound hair dryer.. also any foul smelling skin or any itchy / hairless patches should be brought to the vets attention on a priority basis diet ideally shuld be a commercial superpremium dry dog food and wet food as usual for any climate : no spicey / oiley / sweet / salty foods anxiety preferrably keep your pet indoors also keep the tv / radio / music on special pills ( melissa) now available for pets. contact your vet for the dosage suitable for your pet. rain care keep your pet dry , warm , indoors for most of the time check on his extremities if cold , provide warmth by way of heaters or heating pad or special winter clothing ..

Rabies

Rabies unlike smallpox has not been eradicated in India. Very recently and tragically in thane a 12 year old boy working with a vet was bitten by a dog rabies positiv. Since no care was taken to treat the boy and no preventive vaccinations done , the boy succumbed in couple of days. I request all pet owners and even caretakers ( those who only feed strays ) to vaccinate self and animals too against rabies.

Stem Cell Therapy

First of all, we are not talking about embryonic stem cells here, but adult-origin stem cells that are taken from the same patient that will be treated with them. Stem cells are present in every tissue of an adult animal’s body. These cells use blood vessels to travel to injured areas where they can differentiate directly into the type of cell needed and/or stimulate and recruit other cells in the area to do so. Their presence in a tissue also helps block pain through a mechanism similar morphine’s mechanism of action, down regulates inflammation, blocks cell death, stimulates the creation of new blood cells, and blocks the formation of or resolves scar tissue.

Stem cell therapy seems most effective when tissue damage is being caused by inflammation and/or a lack of adequate blood supply. Research abounds into exactly which conditions may be amenable to treatment, but right know orthopedic diseases like osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, and fractures top the list of current uses in veterinary medicine. In the not too distant future, treatment for laminitis in horses; some types of liver, heart, and kidney disease; and immune-mediated diseases (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease and atopic dermatitis) may also be commercially available. In fact, some doctors and stem cell processers are currently involved in research protocols and the "compassionate use" of these therapeutic options right now.

The exact details regarding how the service is provided depends on the veterinarian and other service providers involved. Generally, the doctor will collect tissue (fat or bone marrow) from the animal under local or general anesthesia; the tissue is processed to isolate, replicate, and concentrate the stem cells; and the stem cell solution is either injected directly into the injured area (e.g., a joint) and/or given intravenously. Treatment can be repeated more than once if the benefits start to wear off over a period of time.

Determining whether or not stem cell therapy is a reasonable option for a particular individual is very important. Like any type of medical therapy, to be most effective it should be based on an accurate diagnosis, a reasonable expectation as to what the best, worst, and most likely outcomes could be, and dedication to treating the animal as a whole (e.g., surgery to repair a fully ruptured ligament followed stem cell therapy and physical rehabilitation). Stem cells are not magical cure-alls, but they are invaluable for some pets.

The other day watching NGC i was shocked when a french roadside vegetable market was shown.. clean streets , clean people , clean pets always awes me though this time the feeling had a new high when they showed that people who want buy vegetables are not allowed to touch them .. wow this was like superlike for me .. if were to be on facebook ..
imagine our markets , aunties dig their nails deep into the veggies and vegetable vendors wash them with God knows which water , which are grown in places around mumbai tracks..

similarly people just barge into clinic and mostly with their footwear on , inspite of a clear notice on the main door ..
it is highly appreciated especially in place like mumbai to call before you go anywhere / any clinic , leave your footwear outside ..
and avoid going after or during your smoking/ gutka episode ,
possibly leaving your mobile silent..

change is growth .. indians need to change to grow ..

Tragic or pathetic ,i dont have the right word for the apathy of indian pet owners ..
about half of them wouldnt spend a miniscule amount , once a year on its vaccination .. Incidentally in 2012 too there are such people around who choose to be ignorant or are simply languid about caring for their pets .. forget at the aspect that their pets can be a threat to their lives and others around them..
Rabies still a silent killer not just in stray animals but in pet dogs and cats too..
most cat owners amuse me to the hilt .. they feed fish to cats ,1 or usually more .. when asked why wouldnt they vaccinate these cats they would say , these cats are not pets, they are strays , as in they wander the whole day and meet these (surrogate )owners only during mealtimes..
well if a cat is freely roaming he/she is more likely and definitely is a carrier of more than one type of infection .. not jut rabies there are other infections which the cat may not show symptoms but the owner eventually will and land up in a big mess..
a simple vaccination would help prevent all this and feeding cat food instead of fish is so so healthy advantageous and convenient and saves a lot of health traumas in future ..
people usually are so pretentious and they wouldnt even think of considering an idea before accepting or rejecting it ..

crocin ( read as cro sin )

Crocin .. the most common headache / bodyache / fever pill, very commonly uadminisitered by pet owners for the same reasons .. without knowing that very few human drugs can be used safely in pets ..
its tragic that crocin can cause death in pets .. last week a weak rabbit died due to crocin toxicity .. paracetamol the drug contained in crocin is nephrotoxic ( toxic to the kidneys ) in cats , dogs ( in the long run )and almost all other pets .. Administering crocin or any other drug containing paracetamol would be harmful to your pet ..
kindly always consult your vet before giving any home remedy for any mild fever to your pet .. your home remedy could just shorten / fasten its journey with you .. best of luck

Dog bite or a bite from any animal to your pet .. irrespective of vaccination status should be attended by your vet on an urgent basis ..
depending on the biter's vaccination status or health your vet may sugest you to go for a t.t plus rabies 3/5 injection course ..
bypassing this very important protocol may result in grievous irreversible effects like rabies / tetanus and death..
till date, around the world only 3 cases of live, rabies affected human beings are reported .. rest all others have succumbed..

we feed Raw Meat to dogs / cats ..
ideally canines and felines diet sholud contain raw meat .. For example, we all love chocolate and know that a small amount of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is good for us and acts as an anti oxidant. However, for the dogs, the darker the chocolate, the more poisonous it can get. Chocolate has, in fact, been long acknowledged as dangerously toxic for dogs. There are many other substances that are toxic for dogs, many of which people do not know about. Read on to know what substances are toxic for your canine confidante.

Foods that are Toxic To Dogs

Many men offer a sip of beer to their best friend but what they are doing is in fact creating an effect like – stuffing a huge ball of cotton up your dogs nose. Dogs feels intoxicated with just a little sip. Bear leads to increased heart rates, fevers, seizure and even death. So avoid drinking in front of your four legged friend and don’t give him ‘some’ as you usually do with tit bits of food scrap.

Apples, Apricots, Peaches, Cherries

All the fruits mentioned above are very healthy for us, but is poison for the dogs. These fruits contain a form of cyanide compound that poisons the dog if he eats the stems, seeds, or leaves.

Avocados

Everything in an avocado is toxic for your dog. The substance in avocados is called persin, a derivative of fatty acid. Its consumption causes difficulty in breathing, accumulation of fluid around the heart, vomiting, diarrhea, congestion, and heart failure, leading to death.

Baking Soda/ Powder

Found in almost all the kitchens. It is a combination of baking soda and a mild acid usually tartaric acid. If the dog eats large amounts it can lead to muscle spasms, electrolyte changes and congestive heart failure. Found in cakes, biscuits, and any other cooked foods at home or outside.

Chocolate

There is nothing more dangerous than chocolate for a dog. Many people are aware and take precautions, but the dogs love chocolates like humans but even one bite is dangerous. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is present naturally. The dark chocolates have more theobromine. Even a small amount gets into the dogs bloodstream can cause irregular heartbeat, diarrhea and many gastrointestinal problems, even heart attack, internal bleeding, coma and death.

Onions and Garlic

Both onions and garlic contain a chemical called thiosulphate, which make it  toxic for your dog. Their level remains the same even after cooking, microwave or processing. It can cause diarrhea, gastrointestinal problems, and vomiting. Dogs do not have an enzyme in their body that humans have to help digest and assimilate thiosulphate.

Fatty Foods

Dogs love fatty foods and those rich in salt. Excessive amounts can cause pancreatitis bringing on abdominal pain, acute vomiting and diarrhea.

In case of being poisoned

Do not panic. Get to your Vet ASAP! Help him to find out what your dog ate. Check if he has eaten house plants, or cleaning agents, alcohol etc.

Normally dogs eat grass to cleanse their system however, at times this does not work. Consult your vet before giving any remedy including home grown ones.
